Tom Robinson was shot 17 times in the back. They claimed he was trying to climb a fence. Do you believe this or not? What evidence from the text indicates one way or the other? |
Qs: What's your reaction to these chapters? According to Miss Stephanie Crawford, Bob Ewell said, "'It made one down and two more to go.'" What does Bob Ewell mean when he says this? Who is the one? Who do you think are the other two? Why is he saying this?
Directions: Discuss the facts and your opinion. 1. Make a comment about your reaction to these chapters. 2. Respond to at least 2 other classmate's posts. Consider the following: How does Tom Robinson's death affect his family, the town, Atticus, and Scout, Jem and Dill?
Due: Monday, April 9, 2012 9:00 a.m.

ReplyDeleteI think the warden tricked into coming outside of jail and had him shot right on e spot
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mitch.
DeleteI agree with Mitch it did seem like he tricked him to come outside

DeleteI don't think he was Tring to escape they just made it look that way. Bob says this because Tom is the one the Judge and Atticus are the two that remain. Because they made him look the fool. Toms wife now needs to find work to support her family. Some in the town might like that he is dead some won't.
ReplyDeleteI agree that he was tricked. Also Atticus and the judge made mr. Ewell possibly lose the last of his respect if any. Mr. Ewell plans on hurting or killing them.
DeleteI agree he was tricked into making it seem like he was trying to escape.
DeleteI don't think Tom was trying escape, I think they tricked him into it so they could kill him.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Katie on this to
DeleteIf they made it look like he was escaping that gave them the reason to kill him instead of just pulling him out of jail and killing him.
DeleteI don't think they need to trick him, they just jumped him.
DeleteMaybe bob Ewell had set this up.

ReplyDeleteI don't think he was escaping I think they just wanted to kill him
ReplyDeleteI agree they wanted to kill him.
DeleteI never thought of it that way.
DeleteLucas, I agree with you. They just wanted to kill him.
DeleteI also agree, they wanted to kill him and then covered it up, and maybe Bob Ewell had something to do with it.
DeleteI agree with Lucas
DeleteI agree
DeleteI kinda thought he was trying to escape because he knew what would happen to him and the best chance he had at living would be to escape. Looking at the other comments I'm starting to see how they make sense too.
ReplyDeleteTom already knew he was going to die most likely. Do he took the risk to run, knowing he would probably die. So I agree with you also
DeleteI don't think he an, he trusted Atticus and god, he knew whatever happened for a reason, even if he didnt know what reason his death had.
DeleteI agree. I see how the other comments make sense too.
DeleteI agree with you Mariah, I think Tom may have escaped to take away the problem and he knew the risks of his actions
DeleteI think that tom's wife must have been pretty shook up about tom's death, I think that most if the black and the finches are upset but I can't vouch for the rest of the town.
ReplyDeleteThe people at the prison knew about toms case and were afraid of losing to a negro, thinking that he he won the case it would give the other blacks hope of equality.
Bob ewell was say that Tom was dead so he doesn't have to worry about him and now he wants Atticus and possibly Mayella dead now, at least that's who I think the other people are, or the Cunningham who wanted tom's innocents.
To tell you the truth I was very surprised that Tom died. I did not think he was going to die. I think he means one person down and two more to take care of. Tom Robinson is the one and the other two well I believe they are Atticus just because Bob already threatened Atticus and spit in his face and the other person I think is Mayela. I think her because I think Bob might be realizing from the court case that she might crack and tell his secret soon and he definitely does not want that. I think he would be willing to kill his own daughter to keep a secret but that is just my opinion on the matter.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Evan, I was very surprised when Tom died.
DeleteI agree with this...I didn't see it coming.
DeleteI think it could very well be Mayella also that he wants to get rid of. Like you said she could crack at any second and give away what he does.
DeleteI agree with you when I read he died I was just like wow. And now that you put it in those terms I agree also that he just might try and kill daughter too.
DeleteKatie I never considered Mayella, but now that you mention it..it does make sense.
DeleteMaybe Tom was trying to escape..we don't know...maybe he felt as if he was the problem, and if he escaped he would be taking the problems with him and people wouldn't threaten Atticus or the judge or someone else that helped him. Tom was an innocent man and maybe he put his friends and other people and their families before his own. If he did attempt to escape, he was aware of the risks and consequences....or they just really wanted to kill him.
ReplyDeleteThat is very true, Tom could of been trying to escape and people may have not of even realized it.
DeleteI agree with you, Somers.
DeleteI agree with Tom was an innocent man and they just really wanted to kill him.
DeleteI believe he ran because he had a feeling the court would never find him innocent. I bet Bob Ewell was talking about Tom being the one and Atticus is one of the other two.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe Tom would run, he's not guilty and shouldn't be n jail n the first place but I could see him taking the spot for somebody else because he is an honorable man.
DeleteWhen I read these chapters I was shocked at the missionary circle and Tom's death. Those women are talking about the kids in Africa and how it was their Christian duty to make sure they helped them, yet they don't have a care in the world for the blacks in their community. They find them no more than animals. I definitely wasn't expecting Tom to die in this book. I didn't think Tom would want to run, but then he said in court that he was scared at the Ewell's house so he decided to run. When Bob Ewell said one down one more to go he meant Tom Robinson is out of his life now he just wants Atticus out of his life. I believe that Tom's death has had a great impact on the town, especially his family.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I didn't think he was going to die either. I guess we don't really know if he was trying to escape or not.
DeleteI agree with Becca. I was very shocked with Toms death and also everything that happened with the missionary circle.
DeleteI agree with you Becca. It doesn't make sense that they don't care about the local blacks but they are willing to help the blacks over seas
DeleteI was surprised with how the ladies in the missionary circle acted. They care so much about the children in Africa, but they could care less about the blacks in their own community. I think they killed Tom because they were scared of Atticus and him winning the appeal. I think Tom's death has affected his wife, the Finches, and all the blacks in their community. I think Bob Ewell meant that he got Tom out of the way, now he has to get rid of Atticus too.
ReplyDeleteIt was shocking how the women cared so much about the children in Africa and could careless about the black's in their community.
DeleteI agree with you Kirsten. It was shocking to read that the women cared so much about children in Africa and not about the blacks in their own area. It's just sad.
DeleteI agree with Ashely and Kirsten and Katie. It was hypocritical of them to feel sorry for the children of Africa but not the blacks in their own neighborhood who are in bad conditions and are treated terribly.
DeleteI was very shocked to read that Tom had been shot. I feel like he tried to escape because things just got to be to much in jail and he couldn't handle it anymore. What Bob means by that is he already got Tom in jail and now he just needs two more. I think if them would be Atticus but I am not sure about the other one. This will have a great impact on everyone in the community.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't think he tried to escape himself. He was somehow set up to make it look like he was escaping and to take the blame away from someone else. Like Bob Ewell..
DeleteI believe Tom Robinson was not trying to escape and that they tricked him so they could kill him. What I think Bob meant was that he put one in jail and now he needs to more. I think he wants Atticus gone cause he pretty much threatened his well being. I just don't know who the second person would be.
ReplyDeleteHe may or may not have been trying to escape, but either way they were trying to kill him.
ReplyDeleteDon't you think To Robinson would be to smart for that kind of stuff he should of know not trusting white people
DeleteI don't think he was trying to escape, he had a family to care for. I think they tried to make him run and they shot him.
DeleteTo me it was very sad that Tom Robinson got shot I thought he was going to get out towards the end of the book but I guess not. When Bob said one down two to go I think Bob Edwell had something to do with the killing of Tom, the next two on his list I think are Jem and his father.
ReplyDeleteYa :(
DeleteExcept I think it was a good ending, it added to the misery of it, you almost had to have him die. It was important for the moral of the story for you to truly understand how horrible it was.
I agree with you Irene. I thought that in the end everything would be good and they would win the trial.
DeleteTom Robinson getting shot was something I was not expecting, I don't think he was trying to escape, and Bob Ewell is targeting Atticus.
ReplyDeleteAgreed joseph
DeleteI guess I fell into the hope of the book, I was hoping Tom would somehow beat the odds and make it out and live a decent life, so when he was shot and killed it caught me off guard. And Bob Ewell, he had something to do with the killing of Tom and I think one of the next two will be Atticus because he said I'll get you. I have no idea who the other one is..
ReplyDeleteWell said Sammie, well said
DeleteI agree. I thought too that nobody would get shot and the book would have a good ending.
DeleteI think one down meant Tom Robinson was murdered and that maybe two left meant Atticus or....
ReplyDeleteSpoiler!
When he attacked the children, maybe ewell is going after Atticus's family and not directly to him, maybe he wanted him to live in misery. It was confusing to understand bob ewell.
I think it's stupid that Tom died, he was a good guy and the author really made me mad by killing him it was really shocking
ReplyDeleteThe author had to kill him in order to get his point across...
DeleteI was a kind of shocked when Tom Robinson got shot. I thought there would be at least another trial. I think he meant that Tom Robinson is already dead and now Atticus and Calpurnia have to die. Atticus because he is for black people and Calpurnia because she is proud that she is black.
ReplyDeleteI never thought of Tom wanting to kill Calpurnia but now that you have said it, it gets me thinking that maybe he does wanna kill Calpurnia because she's proud of who she is.
DeleteTom never wanted to kill anyone. Did you mean bob Ewell? Ya I know why he would want to kill Calpurnia.
DeleteJust like everyone said, I am very shocked that Tom Robinson was shot and killed. But I think most of us our used to the happy ending and this story wasnt meant for a happy ending for him. That was the whole point, for us to understand the tragedies of these times and to realize not everyone has a happy ending.
ReplyDeleteAgreed!
DeleteI'm not shocked that he died. I'm shocked that he was shot that many times.
ReplyDeleteWas there any reason why he was shot so many times? One tough hombre I guess.
DeleteWhen I read that Tom had died I was extremely shocked and sad. Tom didn't deserve to die! He was a nice man who only helped Mayella because he felt sorry for her. I believe that Bob Ewell had something to do with the death of Tom and next two will be Atticus because he made him look like a fool and Mayella because she almost told everyone the truth and he doesn't want that to happen.
ReplyDeleteI feel Tom did what most men would do when sentenced to death and not guilt of charge. RUN. A wise meerkat once said, " when the world turns its back on you you turn you back on it".
ReplyDeleteIt was the Tomoan from Lion King.
